At its heart, the story of the Brazilian Amazon is about the 21 million people who in some way or another call it home. Everyday from December 7 through 18 - coinciding with the Copenhagen climate change summit – I am introducing you to a new person who lives in the Brazilian Amazon and whom I came across during my most recent reporting trip to the area. This is the tenth of twelve installments of ‘Faces of the Amazon.’ To read the introductory blog post about this project, click here.

Name: Lida dos Reis Miranda

Age: 43

Where from: Community of Alvorada, Amazonas

Population: “About 10 or 12” families she says.

“I am a cook here in the community of Boa Frente here in the Juma Reserve. But I am not from Boa Frente. I am from a community called Alvorada. I just came here to work. My husband works here too.”

“I cook all the meals here. All of them. Last week I was so busy. We had like 30 kids here, I had a line of kids wanting to eat. My gosh, my son, it was crazy here. I didn’t even have enough plates.”

“I have family in Rondonia (state). I have five kids. I used to live in the city, but I didn’t like it. You work, work, work. You have no life there.”

“In Alvorada, where I am from, we have about 10 families in my community. I think 12 maybe.”

“I love my life here. We have a river, we have fish, we have very good tapioca, coffee, beans, fruit, pineapple. The pineapple is sweeter here. We also have nuts from this region.”

“My community we also plant rice and we have corn.”

“I am very happy. In my house we also sing a lot. We have fun all the time.”
