At its heart, the story of the Brazilian Amazon is about the 21 million people who in some way or another call it home. Every day from December 7 through 18 - coinciding with the Copenhagen climate change summit – I am introducing you to a new person who lives in the Brazilian Amazon and whom I came across during my most recent reporting trip to the area. This is the last of the 12 installments of ‘Faces of the Amazon.’ To read the introductory blog post about this project, click here.

Name: Jose Marcos Aguiar, and his children Mateos, Milena and Edison Fernando

Age: Jose Marcos, 50; Mateos, 3; Milena, 6; Edison Fernando, 5.

Where from: Boa Frente, on the banks of the Madeira River.

Population: About 94.

“I have been living here in the community of Boa Frente for 11 years now. I like it here. Before people would hire us to go to work to cut the forest. I used to cut the forest, but no more. I was hired to do a job and I would do it. But now we have sustainable management projects here in Boa Frente, so that is better.

"People know we don’t cut anymore – it’s prohibited here. Now people from all over come and visit us to see how we do it.”

“The community is better. We have a school now.

“I am building my house here. It’s not done yet. It’s not a fancy house. But it will be for my family, my wife, kids, right here. When you come back, you can stay here because it will be done."
