Details have begun emerging of a US Defence Department review of the shooting rampage at the Texas army base in which a Muslim officer allegedly killed thirteen people.

The review - parts of which have been obtained by the Associated Press news agency - show superior officers ignored their own worries about Major Nidal Hasan’s extreme views on Islam and inappropriate behaviour.

The review's not been made public but already a picture's emerging of the build-up to the November the fifth shootings at Fort Hood.

The information was gathered during an internal Pentagon investigation into the killings at the Texas army base and obtained by The Associated Press.

According to the AP’s reporting, the review shows supervisors who ignored warnings about whether Major Hasan was suitable for the job of army psychiatrist, who also overlooked what the AP says were his strident views on Islam and and his repeated inappropriate behaviour.

Despite this AP says the review shows these same supervisors green-lighted Hasan's promotions.

Thirty nine year old Major Nidal Hasan is accused of murdering 13 people in the shooting – the worst such incident on a US military base.

The Defence Department review does not delve into allegations Hasan corresponded by e-mail with Yemen-based cleric Anwar al-Awlaki before the attack.

Anwar al-Awlaki is also suspected of being connected to the Detroit aircraft bombing attempt.

Those issues are part of separate criminal investigation by law enforcement officials into the Ford Hood massacre and the Detroit plot.

The full Defence Department Review into what happened at Ford Hood on November the fifth is still be completed.

It's expected to be on Defence Secretary Robert Gates’ desk by the end of the week.
