Remaking a brand is no easy task – you rarely win many plaudits and everyone is a critic. British Airways was the self proclaimed world’s favourite airline – something you can scoff about right now. BA’s attempt to change its image to reflect its global reach backfired spectacularly as it replaced the British flag on its tail fin – the then Prime Minister Margret Thatcher placed a handkerchief over the ethnic designs.

It appears that British Airways has been flying on autopilot.

The one-time self-proclaimed world’s favourite airline sat on its laurels – dishing up poor cuisine, making monopolistic profits on North Atlantic routes and treating customers like abandoned baggage.

Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive, is now at "war" with the unions, attempting to obliterate years of fat.

The bloated salaries of its cabin crew certainly puts loss-making BA's business model in jeopardy.

Just how bloated is BA? Cabin crews get on average $44,850 a year, compared to rival Virgin Atlantic’s $21,800.

Senior cabin crew members can receive $84,800 a year.
