Osama Hamdan

Osama Hamdan is a senior member of Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement. He is the group's spokesman and a member of its political bureau.

Al Jazeera's Andrew Wander caught up with him at the Al Jazeera Forum to ask how the group defines resistance, what it considers a legitimate target and how far it would go in compromise to achieve peace in the region.

It wasn't exactly news last week when John Brennan, US president Barack Obama's counterterrorism adviser, suggested that the US work to strengthen "moderate elements" within Hezbollah. Brennan has made similar comments before - last year, in fact - and the Obama administration just last month walked back rumors that it was planning to engage with the Lebanese group.

I've been scooped on a story I should have owned.

On February 23rd a US foreign service officer named Rachel Schneller appeared on a panel with Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdan, right here in Doha, at a Forum I attended that was hosted by the Al Jazeera Cente for Strategic Studies.

According to today's Wall Street Journal, she acknowledged sitting with Hamdan afterwards for a friendly cup of tea, in a meeting that had the blessing of her superiors back at the US state department.

Now that is news.

Below is what I submitted that night from Dubai (I had to travel from Doha that afternoon on business and could not finish the discussion).
