On Twitter, several activists are complaining about the attitude of the military police, claiming they chased and beat protesters about an hour ago. They also say that gangs were attacking them nearby the state security building.

Some are writing very angry comments about the military and its police.

The last time military police clashed with protesters, about a week ago, the military council came out and apologised.

Al Jazeera Arabic reports that the timing today is significant, considering that a new prime minister and minister of Interior were recently appointed - and are described as "sympathetic to the people and their demands".

There are also reports that some gangs attacked students at Cairo University today, where students organised several protests to call on various schools' deans - seen as cose to the Mubarak regime - to resign.

The army has shot in the air to disperse a 1,000-strong crowd attempting to storm the Ministry of Interior's state security building in Cairo, multiple eyewitnesses report.

The General Prosecutor has ordered the building sealed pending investigation and the military does not want protestors to enter the building, Al Jazeera has been told.

Protesters had stormed a state security building last night, and said they had blocked the destruction of papers documenting corruption during Hosni Mubarak's term in power.
