Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is visiting Libyan rebel stronghold of Benghazi today after saying the likely end of Muammar Gaddafi's rule was a lesson for Middle Eastern leaders who ignore demands of their people.
During a press conference held together with Mustafa Abdul Jalil, the leader of the National Transitional Council, Davutoglu said NATO security measures are to continue until full security is established.
He also added that frozen Libyan assets should be released soon as Libyans need finances quickly.
Here are some key Davutoglu quotes and highlights from the presser:
* After the latest rebel victories we all believe we are nearer to their aspirations. All of Turkey stands by the people of Libya.
* Libya should be free and democratic according to the wishes of its people. Its people should be unified and Libya should restore its position in the world. And its flag should be hoisted high.
* Libya has many wealth and should be in a much better position. We stand by NTC leader Mustafa Abdul Jalil. He delivered a great statement yesterday from which world leaders should learn lessons; he established the path for the Libya of the future.
* Half of the people of Turkey heart beats with Somalia and the other half with Libya.
* I repeat that we will stand by the NTC and Mustafa Abdul Jalil in the coming stage. The decisions taken by the Contact group in Istanbul paved the way for this stage.
* I exchanged with Abdul Jalil all the contacts I have held recently about the future of Libya. We will hold a meeting for top officials in the Contact group in Istanbul and we will look at the needs of Libya in the next stage.
* NATO will continue its operations until things are calm in Libya. We don’t want any area of Libya to live without peace and security.
* All Libyan assets should be unfrozen as soon as possible. We will continue to support the NTC and Abdel Jalil.
In other news, Taner Yildiz, the Turkish energy minister, said Turkey wants state-owned oil and gas exploration company Turkiye Petrolleri (TPAO) to resume oil exploration and production work in Libya if security is established.
TPAO has interests in six Libyan oil wells, Yildiz said on Tuesday.
