Numerous US-based websites, including Wikipedia, Boing Boing and Reddit have gone offline as a protest against two US laws that they say limits important freedoms that the internet has brought people.

The two laws are called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA).

Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter, eBay and AOL have all spoken out against the proposed legislation.

Rob Beschizza, the managing editor of Boing Boing, joins us from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to discuss the reasoning behind his company's internet blackout.

Philadelphia Mayor Nutter has announced that the Occupy Philadelphia encampment will be evicted. In a statement posted on the city's official blog website, the mayor says:

...I am announcing that as of 5pm today everyone now encamped on Dilworth Plaza has 48-hours to remove their possessions and themselves from the project site, which will be fenced for the construction project and public’s safety starting some time next week...

We reject both [permit] applications because of the clear, adverse impact on public health and safety and other reasons. As I’ve noted many times in the past, we cannot allow current conditions, including masses of tents and 24-hour a day camping, to continue.

In the lengthy letter, the mayor said that Occupy Philadelphia would be allowed to continue after 48 hours, as long as it follows the following restraints:

- A limit on activity from 9 am to 7pm

  1. - Agreement that no overnight activity or sleeping is allowed
  2. - And that no structures or tents are allowed

An activist from Occupy Philadelphia said that on Saturday, November 26, the group will be meeting to discuss strategy on on how to deal with the eviction notice.
