September 11 Live Blog

Al Jazeera's staff brings you the special coverage of the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The world's been marking 10 years since the 9/11 attacks. President Barack Obama honoured the victims at three of the sites. He ended commemorations by praising the American resolve. Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher sent in this report.

US President Barack Obama gave a speech to close out major US memorials to the attacks of 9/11, 2001.

These are some of his quotes:

"Today it is worth remembering what has not changed: Our character as a nation has not changed... Our faith in god and in each other, that has not changed... Our belief in America, born of a timeless ideal, that men and women should govern themselves, that all people are created equal [has not changed].

"These past 10 years have shown that America does not give in to fear... These past 10 years have shown America's resolve to defend its citizens and our way of life.

"Two million Americans have gone to war since 9/11... Too many will never come home. Those that do carry dark memories from distant places and the legacy of fallen friends.

"These 10 years have shown that we hold fast to our freedoms.

"Debates about war and peace, about security and civil liberties, have often been fierce over these last 10 years.

"These past 10 years tell a story of our resilience.

"Nothing can break the will of a truly united America... We have overcome slavery and civil war, bread lines and fascism, recession and riots, communism and, yes, terrorism.

"May god bless the memory of those we lost, and may god bless the United States of America."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered remarks on Sunday afternoon in New York at an event with the victims' families.

She expressed "particular satisfaction" at being part of the team that "made sure Bin Laden was brought to justice" and addressed other facets of the 9/11 anniversary:

Even though the United States, thankfully, has not experienced another attack since 9/11, London has, Madrid has, Mumbai has, Islamabad has, Jakarta, Bali, other places continue to be attacked. And we want to make sure that every person understands that these violent extremists are not representing any religion. They are representing evil, and evil-ism. And they need to be stopped by all people.

We don't just want to capture and kill terrorist leaders. We want to make them irrelevant. We want to prevent them from extracting new recruits. We want to end the attraction they have for young people.

Now we're making progress, but this weekend's threats are one more reminder that we still face danger and we have to stay vigilant. We have to keep our eye on what we're fighting against, but we also have to remember what we are fighting for. Because our goal after all is not merely to defeat our enemies, but to represent the best of humanity. The values and traditions that are America at our core.

Our struggle against terrorism is rooted in our strengths as a society, and one of those strengths is resilience.

According to the AP news agency, the Secret Service is investigating three threatening messages that were posted on the White House's Facebook page that reportedly included a picture of Osama bin Laden.

One said, "We'll come back 11/9/2011 to kill u all." Another showed small plane icons and said, "Today we'll come 11/9/2011."

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan says the agency has referred the messages to its internet threat desk.

Donovan says the Secret Service has a process in place to handle the wide spectrum of internet threats, social media posts and tweets brought to the attention of officials. The messages were first reported by WNBC in New York.

Al Jazeera's Monica Villamizar, reporting from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, produced this video.
