Tanks supported by soldiers on foot have begun moving into Idlib from the southeast, witnesses have told Al Jazeera. Four people have died and 30 have been injured so far in the shelling today, they said.

The Syrian army has reinforced its presence in Idlib province since driving rebels out of Homs, and activists believe they plan to stage a similar operation.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces killed at least four civilians in an intensified tank and rocket bombardment in the Syrian city of Homs on Saturday to put down a popular revolt demanding his removal, activists said.

"This is the most violent barrage since the attack on Homs started six days ago. The four included a 55-year old woman. They were killed by shelling that hit a building where they live in Bab Amro," opposition activist Mohammad Hassan told Reuters by satelite phone from Homs.

Bombardment by President Bashar al Assad's forces on the city of Homs killed at least 50 people on Monday, a senior member of the Syrian National Council said.

"The tally that we have received from various activists in Homs since the shelling started at six this morning is 50, mostly civilians. The regime is acting as if it were immune to international intervention and has a free hand to use violence against the people," Catherine al-Talli told Reuters.

This series of screegrabs from mobile phone video, provided by the AFP news agency, appears to show Gaddafi son Mutassim after his capture and before his death in Sirte on Thursday. Until now, the only images available of Mutassim showed his lifeless body, bearing a circular wound in his neck. In these images, his shirt appears to be covered in blood coming from a similar area.

The images raise the question of how Mutassim, like his father, died after being captured alive.

At least 24 civilians were killed by security forces across Syria, including 10 after evening prayers on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a human rights activist said on Tuesday.

"Ten martyrs fell and several people were wounded by gunfire from security forces during protests in several Syrian towns after the 'taraweeh' evening prayers" on Monday's first day of Ramadan, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights chief Rami Abdel Rahman said, adding that the day's death toll was 24.

He told AFP in Nicosia that six people were killed when thousands of protesters turned out in Irbin northeast of the capital, one was killed near Damascus, two in Latakia and one in the central city of Homs.

More than 150 people were taken in for questioning on Monday evening, Abdel Rahman added.

The AFP news agency says seven people were shot dead by Syrian security forces on Sunday.

Two more civilians were killed in Talbiseh and a nearby village, according to an activist cited in the report.
