The deaths of two Western journalists in Syria are "another example of the shameless brutality" of the Syrian regime, US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told AFP news agency on Wednesday.

Nuland was referring to US-born Sunday Times war correspondent Marie Colvin and freelance French photojournalist Remi Ochlik, who were killed in the city  of Homs on Wednesday by shelling from President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

The United States made a call for a political solution to stop further bloodshed, where over 70 people were killed in three days of violence.

Victoria Nuland, the spokeswoman for the US state department, called upon "all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from further violence" while demanding a "prompt, impartial investigation" into the events that led to the violence.

Libya's rebel Transitional National Council is unlikely to ask for an international peacekeeping force to stabilize the country, but may seek outside help on policing, the State Department said on Thursday.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland would not comment on whether the United States, which has pledged not to put "boots on the ground" in post-war Libya, would take part in assisting with police efforts.

But she said Washington would look favorably on a Libyan request to the United Nations.

Syrian troops have killed at least 22 people in a crackdown they launched in the central city of Hama on Tuesday, a human rights group said.

"At least 22 people were killed in Hama and more than 80 wounded, some of them seriously," Ammar Qurabi of the National Organisation for Human Rights said on Wednesday.

"The wounded are being treated in two hospitals in Hama," he said in a statement, adding that troops had entered the Al-Hurani hospital.

"A large number of Hama residents have fled either to the nearby town of Al-Salamiya or twoards Damascus," Qurabi said.

The US State Department on Tuesday urged the Syrian regime to withdraw its forces from Hama, a city of 800,000 people that saw a massive anti-government demonstration by as many as half a million people last Friday.

"We urge the government of Syria to immediately halt its intimidation and arrest campaign, to pull its security forces back from Hama and other cities, and to allow Syrians to express their opinions freely so that a genuine transition to democracy can take place," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said.

Reuters reports that the United States dismissed an election proposal by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, on Thursday.

State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily briefing: "I think it's a little late for that," and repeated the US view that "it's time for him (Gaddafi) to go."
