Former Indian Ambassador MK Bhadrakumar tries to downplay the suggestions of a US role in the Sistan bombings, arguing that Washington has too much to lose in nuclear talks in Vienna.
"Clearly, Obama must be out of his mind to have his intelligence agencies mount a terrorist attack on Iran, which would torpedo his own gameplan to address the Iran nuclear file."
Fair point, but it's not Obama that's being accused here. The estimated $400 million that President Bush authorised for covert activities against Iran is already in the system, and it probably bought a very large amount of expertise and resources.
But Bhadrakumar makes a much more intriguing point downpage:
"Riyadh has a vested interest, which is no less than Israel's, to disrupt the US-Iran nuclear talks."
"Riyadh is worried that Iran's status as a regional power will get a massive boost if the normalization process with the US advances, and that can only be at the cost of Saudi Arabia's pre-eminence in the region."
Not just that, but Riyadh is already fighting what many consider a proxy war against Iran, in the border battle with Shias in Yemen. Supporting the Sunni group Jundullah could be seen as a strategic move to expand that confrontation on another front.
