17:31pm In a news conference in Washington DC on Barack Obama, the US president said, "We ... are seeing right signals coming out of Egypt" but added that "America can't dictate" how foreigners run their countries. He added:

We have sent a strong message to our allies in the region that real change is these societies is not going to happen because of terrorism but because people come together.

10:40am Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Cairo reports that Tarek el-Bishry, a pro-opposition former judge and expert in Islamic law, has been selected to head a committee to draft the constitution. 

Wael Ghoneim said that members at the supreme council of the Egyptian armed forces told him that a referendum on constitutional amendments will be held within two months. 

Ghoneim has said that the coalition will submit the military council list of candidates to fill the post of prime minister for the next phase.

7:18am The military has been trying to clear Cairo's Tahrir Square, but some protesters are refusing to leave and are still demonstrating, some against each other.

6:43am The US receives requests from Egypt's new government to freeze the assets of officials who worked for Mubarak, a senior US official says.

The State Department official, who requested anonymity, told reporters that Washington had not been requested, however, to freeze the assets of Mubarak himself.

4.35am Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, has told Al Jazeera that the US is hopeful Egypt will become a model for democracy in the region.

There are critics who say the US government is again sitting on the fence -- as it did before president Mubarak resigned -- in deciding whether to back the people or the army.

4.31am Senior White House officials are studying scores of global revolutions and political transitions for trends that might help Egypt plot an orderly and permanent shift to democratic rule, the news agency AFP reports. 

A senior US official told AFP that President Barack Obama's foreign policy braintrust had surveyed transitions in Asia, Europe and South America, as it assesses Egypt's future after the sudden fall of President Hosni Mubarak.

12.01am On February 14, Egyptian military presence was strong around the capital, as the army urged citizens to return to normal life. But police and other demonstrators still gathered to voice some of their grievances. James Bays reports from Cairo.
