As the first major hurricane of the 2011 season extends its reach, Americans are bracing for reign of wind, rain and destruction

Baltimore, like Washington, sits on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay - that make those of us who live in this region think we are protected from the worst tropical weather can bring us - until a hurricane forms, and then we are reminded that hurricanes love warm water.

And so, the rush - to buy pallets of bottled water, to install a generator that might not ever be needed again, to trade fish tales about the last time a major storm hit this area, or one’s hometown, and to wait for the storm that everyone from the President to the Archbishop of Baltimore says should not be treated lightly.

As it happens, Irene is taking its sweet time moving up the East Coast - at a half-hour past sunset; the rain begins to fall more intensely.  Wind gusts are more frequent. The only wildlife around - a pair of ducks - has swum off in search of shelter.

"Cleveland rocks..."

...At least, that was president Barack Obama's goal on Sunday, when he and his vice-president, Joe Biden, headlined a Democratic rally in Ohio's second-largest city: to get the crowd fired up enough to head down the street from the arena and to cast a ballot in this year's midterm elections.

Certainly when a small group of hecklers started screaming from the back of the arena, the crowd instantly broke out into chants of "Yes We Can!" But then, as security escorted the young men out of their seats, Obama chimed in: "I can’t hear you.

I look at my press credentials from the five political rallies where President Barack Obama spoke in recent weeks, and their simple design gives no hint of the energy surging through the crowds who waited to see him.

Madison, Wisconsin:

It's a warm and sunny day along the shores of Lake Mendota, where the University of Wisconsin’s flagship campus sits. Students crisscross the campus in their red and white t-shirts, eager to see the man they helped send to the White House two years ago – and just as eager to see the roots-rock singer and guitarist Ben Harper, a longtime Obama supporter who will perform at the rally.

The stage sits in the heart of campus, on Library Mall – an American flag suspended from the library, and cardboard letters reading “Moving America Forward” hang from another.
